Wednesday Hodgepodge – Vol. 122
It’s time for Wednesday Hodgepodge again! These were some crazy questions this week… but, read on and join us each week for some fun!
1. April showers bring May flowers…what have you been showered with this month?
Craziness. I don’t know why this month has been nuts. It seems everything I touch goes to pot or I am losing things—in addition to my mind.
2. What is the nature of compassion? Is it learned or innate? Can compassion be learned? If you’re a parent is this something you’ve purposely sought to instill in your children, and if so how?
I think compassion is both learned and innate. I do believe compassion can be learned up to a point. I repeatedly reiterate to my children that they need to be caring towards others and love one another. When they start bickering or fighting, I repeatedly tell them that “this is the only brother/sister you will ever have and you need each other forever.” It just warms my heart though, when one of us gets hurt or upset and they are quick to be there to say “take a deep breath” or “It will be okay, I’m here.” I know I am doing something right.
3. Do you prefer to watch romantic comedy or romantic drama…or are you rolling your eyes saying bring on the action flicks?
It really just depends—I like all three. One of my favorite romantic comedies is Same Place, Next Year with Alan Alda. My favorite romantic drama is “Lost in Translation.” My favorite action flicks are any of the Fast and Furious movies.
4. It’s April which means baseball season is officially upon us here in the US of A. Humphrey Bogart is quoted as saying “A hot dog at the ballgame beats roast beef at the Ritz.” Agree or Disagree?
Well, seeing as I have never had the opportunity to eat roast beef at the Ritz, I will have to agree with Bogart. But, I hate baseball. So, I would have to modify his quote to be a hot dog at the race track. There is just something about a track dog with all the fixin’s while standing in the shade watching the world go by. Nothing like it in the world.
5. What’s something in your community or city that needs fixing or improving?
The. Phone. Company. OMG. Do you remember a while back there was deregulation in utilities. Well, for some reason that didn’t include our town. So, we are required to use this jacked up, small town, dumber than anything, slow internet, crazy local phone company. We had DSL and it was like flipping dial up. I half expected to hear the screeching of the modem as it dialed out.
A few months ago, they sent me a late bill—we had all been very sick in the month of January and I didn’t pay the $40 bill. I figured I would pay the $80 the following month and be done with it. So, I get the bill showing $80 with a due date of February 15th. I then get a disconnect notice with a due date of February 12th . I paid the bill online on the 12th. They disconnect my phone and internet anyways. Which, would have pissed me off… but, I was livid. I had a research paper due that I was working on and had to do all my research on my cell phone!
I called and screamed at them and then called the PUCO and of course PUCO took their side. I am still not sure how they can get away with sending me a bill with a due date AFTER the disconnection notice date. Go figure.
So, anyways… I ended up calling every cable and phone company trying to find someone who could get me service and was able to get Time Warner to connect me. Now, I have phone and Internet through TWC. Can I tell you how wonderful it is to have fast internet again?

7. April 22nd is Earth Day…do you believe there’s life on other planets? That wasn’t the question you were expecting was it?
I don’t think there are humans or aliens, but I think there is bacteria or things like that on other planets.
8. Insert your own random thought here.
On Monday, I received the textbook for my next class. Management Processes and Controls. I opened the package and it was a 3” stack of shrink wrapped loose leaf pages with holes. No binder. I went and grabbed a binder and the holes didn’t line up. I got onto the school bookstore website and nothing was mentioned for purchasing a binder to fit or anything. I ransacked the house looking for something to bind the pages together. I was trying to figure out if I could use ribbon or zip ties or what. I ended up coming across a bag full of scrapbook album posts that I had saved when I converted my albums to straps. (Thank God I am a pack rat sometimes). So, I hooked my book together with that. Who in their right mind thought up the idea of a loose leaf text book… especially when the pages don’t fit into a normal binder?
