Wednesday Hodgepodge – Vol. 120

It’s hump day!  Yeah!  Half way to Friday.  I have one last paper to finish up by tomorrow and I am done with accounting theory.  I am against burning books… but I am seriously considering torching the theory text book.  Sheesh.  Well, without further adieu (do I say that every Wednesday?) … here is the Hodgepodge.  Come join us, we’d love to have you!

1. Share one fun thing you did last week, while the Hodgepodge was on ‘spring break’.

We took the kids to Toys R Us and bought them new bicycles.

2.  April 10th is National Sibling Day…do you have siblings, and if so are you close? Share a favorite story featuring one or all of your siblings. If you don’t have siblings, did you ever wish you did?

I had a brother who died 13 years ago when he was 17 in a car accident.  We were very close.  His nickname was Bubba and he called me Babette.

Probably the funniest story about my brother is when we would go grocery shopping, you never knew what he would do.  His normal thing was to walk up to people in the store and in this little, whiny kid voice say, “Ma?  Ma?  Have you seen my Ma?” at the top of his lungs.  He’d be three aisle over and you would hear him yelling that.  He always was notorious for riding the bicycles all over the store.  I can’t tell you how many times we were asked to leave Walmart and Meijer.  He also would “double oh 7” around corners and hide like he was a secret agent or something.  By the time my parents and I would get out of the store, our sides would be hurting so bad from laughing.

3. Is it important to you to ‘buy American’? Why or why not? How much of an effort do you make to ‘buy American’? If you’re not American, insert your own country in the blank.

Honestly, I really don’t give it much thought.  I tend to focus more on quality.

4. Besides The Bible, what book has impacted your spirituality in some way?

Oh my.  I don’t know.  I’d probably say it is a toss up between don Miguel Ruiz’s The Voice of Knowledge and Christine Arylo’s Madly in Love With Me: Becoming Your Own Best Friend.

5. April showers bring May flowers or so the saying goes.  Do you find rainy days calming or depressing?  When were you last caught in a rainstorm? What’s blooming in your neck of the woods today?

I like rainy days.  Those are good days to curl up with a good book and a blanket and read all day.  Of course, now that I have kids I don’t get to do that much anymore.

The last time I was caught in a rainstorm– I’m sure it’s happened since, but this one freaked me out– I was coming home from Archiver’s in Columbus and I was by myself on the interstate.  The tornado warning came over the radio and I had to pull off on the side of the road because the rain was so heavy I couldn’t even see.  There was this long line of cars pulled over underneath this overpass.  We all sat there until the storm passed.  Scared me to death.  The wind was shaking my mini van and I had no cell service to call the Hubs to tell him where I was.

Right now, only daffodils are blooming.

6. What’s your favorite yellow food?

Okay… as soon as I read this, I immediately thought “noodles.”  Nana will kill me for telling this story… but, my grandma always would dye her egg noodles with yellow food coloring so they looked like “real” egg noodles.  Even thought they WERE real egg noodles.  Every holiday, we would eat these noodles that were unnaturally yellow.  It became a big joke in my family.

7. April is National Poetry Month…what’s a poem that holds special meaning for you, and why is it special?

The Road Not Taken – Robert Frost

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim
Because it was grassy and wanted wear,
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I marked the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I,
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

8.  Insert your own random thought here.

I am so ready for Spring and the weather keeps going back and forth.  I hate Ohio weather.  My nose is all stuffy, have a sinus headache and my throat is itching.  Not fun.  The kids were supposed to have their swing set put up this weekend– thanks to the Hubs, Grandpa G and Uncle B, but the weather is only supposed to be 50 and breezy.  I hate this time of year.  I want to get outside and plant my garden and play with the kids.

  1. Hi, visiting today from the Hodgepodge. I don’t think I’ve visited here before.
That driving situation you described must have been really scary.
Sorry for the loss of your brother. You do have such sweet memories of him.
The allergies are starting here on LI. The weather has been close to 80 and will be back to the 50s by the weekend. Sounds similar 😉

  2. I like that poem; it fits me too!

I know what you mean about the weather. With the exception of 2011, I have found there has been less sow in Ohio than there was when I lived in Michigan. The weather also not on;ly changes day to day and week to week, but year to year too! Today the rain is messing with my back and knees. 😛

Yellow makes egg noodles…I have to try that! hehe. (TFS!)

  3. Thanks for stopping by! Off to visit you!

  4. Since we moved up North further– which really isn’t THAT far north of where I grew up, it seems the weather is totally different than it is at Nana’s house. Whew. Crazy.

  5. Spring hasn’t quite landed here yet either, but I’m ready! I love the Robert Frost poem too…it’s one of my favorites.
