The Inconvenient Marriage of Charlotte Beck by Kathleen Y’Barbo

The Inconvenient Marriage of Charlotte Beck by Kathleen Y’Barbo is a historical romance set in both Victorian London and the Old West.   It is a sequel to The Confidential Life of Eugenia Cooper and Anna Finish and the Hire Gun, but is easily read by itself.  Besides, how can you go wrong with the Queen of England and Wild Buffalo Bill Cody in the same book?!

Charlotte is ready for adult hood and to be presented to society, but she has a knack for getting into mishaps that the other socialites frown upon.  Enter Alex Hambly, and within minutes she has fallen off a balcony into his arms, is in an awkward social situation if they are discovered, and instigates her uncle into punching him… except, he thinks it is Alex’s twin brother!

When Charlotte decides to join the family business, and asks to go to Wesley College, her father agrees only if she enters into a engagement pact with Alex.  They agree to Daniel’s terms and secretly plot how they will annul their marriage.  Then, it starts to get interesting!

As I was reading the book, I kept saying to myself, “That would be me.” and “That sounds like something I would do.”  The mishaps Charlotte gets into are downright hysterical at times.  My favorite is her “trick” at the Wild West Show.  Even her father, reminded me of my dad growing up– he would give me enough rope to hang myself, in hopes that I would learn my lesson.

I highly recommend The Inconvenient Marriage of Charlotte Beck.  The settings, the plot and the characters were amazing.  I felt like I was right there beside Alex and Charlotte throughout the story and was very sad to see it end!  I will definitely be on the look out for other books by Kathleen Y’Barbo.
