Paper Cake Toppers
I have a hard time paying for cakes for my kids’ birthday– the prices are so outrageous. This year, I decided– I am crafty, I can come up with something. And, I did… with nothing more than some basic supplies and ingenuity… I came up with a couple of super-cool cake toppers. The best part is… I’m going to tell you how to make them!
Supplies: coloring sheet, scrapbook paper, black marker, pencil, sharp scissors, transparent tape, scrapbook adhesive
Note: Try to choose a coloring sheet that is not detailed– larger shapes are better.
You can use an actual coloring book or something you found on the Internet.
Cut the pieces of your coloring sheet apart.
Determine which color will be your base. I chose yellow for the center of the flower to be my base color.
Trace your shapes onto the colored card stock with pencil. Do not trace anything on the “base” color.
Cut these traced shapes out. (I didn’t take a picture, but I am guessing you can handle it. I trust you.)
Next, adhere your cut out pieces together to recreate the coloring page picture. You will adhere this to your “base” color.
As you can see, I cut out the center of the flower to allow the yellow to show through, and to create a 3D effect.
Cut out the entire shape from the base shape. Try to be as accurate as possible, but if you can still see the base color, don’t worry.
Adhere the cut out shape to another sheet of card stock. It doesn’t matter what color– but it will be visible from the back of the cake.
Using the black marker (I used a Bic), trace around the entire colored part of your shape.
If you screw up, don’t worry… just smooth out your line and keep going.
Once you have the entire shape outlined, cut it out as close as you can to the glued on shape and your black lines.
After cutting it out, you might have to take the marker and touch up any colors showing through on the edges. Just run the marker along the edge to hide it.
Using tape, attach a stick to the back of the cake topper. This is a cake pop stick, but you could use a skewer or anything that is food safe.
When adhering the stick, keep in mind how tall the cake is. You want to make sure the cake topper is secure in the cake.
Stick it in the cake and pat yourself on the back.
You are an awesome mommy!
Here is the ones I made for the kids’ birthdays. On these, my “base” colors were the flesh colored paper.
These are a little more intricate– I had to careful use my scissors to cut out the insides of the shapes, but it really isn’t bad.
Now, go try it for yourself… and send me a pic, I’d love to see what you made!
