Does your family have any New Year’s traditions? Nana emailed me this morning and suggested I do a post about New Year’s traditions and what we used to do. Of course, I am dealing with two sick kids, a sick husband and fighting the cold I am coming down with… so, this wasn’t first on my mind this morning. But, here it is…
Growing up, we had several traditions about New Year’s. Each New Year’s, we would be allowed to stay up until midnight– or later– to “party.” We’d play games and watch (gasp!) Johnny Carson! We always had shrimp with cocktail sauce, pizza rolls, and those little cocktail weenies that we would eat with tooth picks. The big highlight was we were allowed to “drink” from my mom’s wine glasses. Okay, I honestly cannot remember my parents ever using these glasses for wine… or seeing them drink. All of us drank Hawaiian Punch from them each year. We thought we were so cool growing up.
The next day, we would have pork and sauerkraut for lunch or dinner. Supposedly, this would bring you good luck through the year.
A few years ago, I was at a friend’s house and noticed she had change in her window sills. I asked her why and she said that her family does it every year at New Year’s to bring good fortune.
Another friend of mine, eats black-eyed peas on New Year’s Day. She says they are to “see them through the year.”
