Baked Cinnamon Sugar Donuts

July 30, 2013

Mmmmm.  Donuts.  Baked cinnamon sugar donuts, to be exact.  These are to die for and they don’t even taste like they are baked.  I will warn you– these do take a while to make.  But, they are SO worth it.  I made these for a snack on a weekend for the kids and they each ate three!  I am going to confess– I used store-bought cinnamon sugar mixture, so don’t be afraid to cut corners.  It’s time to make the donuts.

Serves: 12
Ingredients
• Donuts
• 3/4 cup warm milk
• 1 packet active dry yeast
• 1 Tablespoon unsalted butter, melted
• 1/3 cup white sugar
• 1 egg
• 2-1/2 cups all purpose flour
• 1 teaspoon nutmeg
• 1/2 teaspoon salt
• Cinnamon Sugar Topping
• 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
• 1 cup sugar
• 1 teaspoon cinnamon
Instructions
1. Place 1/4 cup of the warm milk in the bowl of a bread maker. Sprinkle the yeast over the milk. Let set for 5 minutes.
2. In a small bowl, combine the remaining milk, sugar and butter. Add to the yeast mixture.
3. Stir gently to combine slightly.
4. Add egg and stir until incorporated.
5. Add the flour, nutmeg, and salt.
6. Set the bread machine on the dough setting and let it do its thing.
7. Transfer the dough to a floured surface. Roll the dough out into 1/2 inch thickness.
8. Using a donut cutter (or two different-sized circle cookie cutters), cut out donuts until there isn’t any dough left.
9. Place the donuts on a cookie sheet sprayed with cooking spray, about 2 inches apart.
10. Cover with a clean towel and allow to sit for 45 minutes.
11. Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
12. Place the cookie sheet in the oven and bake for 7 minutes until lightly golden brown. Do not overbake.
13. Remove the donuts and allow to cool for 5 minutes.
14. Place melted butter in shallow bowl. Mix sugar and cinnamon together.
15. Dip the donuts halfway into the butter, then immediately into the sugar and cinnamon mixture.
16. Allow to set an additional 5 minutes and enjoy!

I love this idea! I think this might be the first version that I have come across, that bakes an actual yeast doughnut 🙂 I will definitely give these a try!

You are a better woman than I am! I could never take the time to make those – but they look fantastic!! I will have to wait for Fall and warm apple cider donuts – YUM:-)
